When I walked out of Latin class on Tuesday night, my spirits lifted. It was Sodality of Mary night, which meant for a few hours I could set aside homework and have fun growing in faith with other young women. At Sodality of Mary, young women at Magdalen College have the opportunity to come together, share a meal, and, under the motherly guidance of Mrs. Harne, to deepen their faith.

Students at Sodality of MaryFor the first Sodality of Mary meeting of the spring semester, we gathered to talk about love, reflecting on 1 Corinthians 13:4-7. “Love is patient and kind……” (RSV) We spent time reflecting on the different aspects of love and how they appear or fail to appear in daily life. Sharing their reflection, one group of students called to mind how, since God is love, He can be substituted in for love in this passage: (God) “bears all things, believes all things, hopes all things, endures all things” (1 Cor. 13: 7 RSV). They continued to add that He is always there for us bearing all our faults, believing in us, hoping in us, enduring all our wrongs. Through it all, He is constant in His love for us.

Commenting on the evening, Anna Hock ‘22 noted that Mrs. Harne has been focusing on virtues and how we can apply them to our daily lives on campus. When Anna was asked why she enjoys the Sodality of Mary, she replied, “I go to sodality to really form deeper relationships and fellowship with the ladies of St. Mary’s.” She went on to add that she highly recommends sodality as a wonderful way to learn, enjoy some laughs, spend time with friends, and deepen one’s faith.
